Preparing for a House Move

Moving house is one of the most stressful times in your life, but the key to getting through unscathed is to plan and prepare in advance. If you are well organised, the whole process will be a lot less terrifying. Here are some basic tips to follow to make sure that your house move goes smoothly.

Decluttering Your Home

It’s pointless to begin packing up all of your belongings without weeding out the things that you no longer need from the essentials. If you fail to declutter before you move you will end up taking all of your rubbish with you and giving yourself extra work once you arrive in your new home. Take the time to sort through all of your possessions and be ruthless. You’ll thank yourself in the end.

Plan Where Everything Will Go

Draw up a floor plan of your new home and plan in advance where all of your furniture will be placed. That way, you won’t waste time on moving time trying out different items in different rooms to see where they’ll fit best. Check measurements of doorways and tight spaces to make sure you can easily fit, otherwise you may have a nasty surprise on the big day.

How Will You Move Your Possessions?

If you don’t have too many large items to move, or if you have access to a large van or skip, you may want to save money by moving house yourself, however, most people will need to use a removals service. If that is the case for you, make sure to book well in advance otherwise you may find that your moving day arrives and none of your local companies have availability.

Packing Up

Packing up all of your belongings is a huge task, so it’s vital to go about it in an organised manner. Firstly, make sure that you have all of the essentials you need including boxes, tape, newspaper, bubble wrap and labels. It’s worth investing in higher quality materials to protect your items more effectively. Wrap delicate and fragile items carefully to avoid accidental damage and avoid overpacking, whatever the temptation. You should always pack items that will be going in the same room in one box for extra convenience when you arrive, and all boxes should be labelled with the room that they are destined for to save time when unloading the van. If you can afford it, and want to simplify the task, a packing service could be the ideal solution.

Get Some Help

Moving isn’t something you want to tackle alone, even if you’re planning on using a removals firm. Ask around your friends and family members and drum up some willing assistants who can help you with unpacking.

Pack an Overnight Box

When you arrive in your new home, you don’t want to be panicking about where all of your essentials are. Pack a separate box with key items such as mugs, tea bags, a kettle, snacks and toilet roll that you can keep to hand. You should also prepare an emergency kit including first aid supplies, a torch, some basic tools and cleaning equipment just in case.
